Di Pacci — Heat-Exchanger E61 Espresso Machine

Bezzera Sole PID Coffee Machine

The Bezzera Sole PID puts a two-litre heat-exchanger boiler, a full E61 group and a plumbable rotary pump into a machine just 305mm wide — commercial hardware on a domestic bench.

Built in Italy by Bezzera, the Milan manufacturer founded in 1901 by Luigi Bezzera, the Sole PID is a heat-exchanger machine designed for people who make more than two coffees at a time. The 2-litre brass heat-exchanger boiler lets you pull a shot and steam milk simultaneously, with enough thermal mass to work through a round of flat whites without the recovery pauses a single-boiler machine forces on you. A Faema E61 group head with thermosyphon circulation keeps the brew path at temperature, digital PID control holds the boiler where you set it in one-degree steps, and an integrated shot timer runs on the same display so you can dial in without a separate scale timer.

What separates the Sole from most machines at this size is the pump and the water supply. Instead of a vibration pump, it uses a rotary pump — quieter in use, steadier under pressure, and connected to a dual water system, so you can run it from the 4-litre internal tank today and hard-plumb it to a mains line later without changing machines. Panels come in stainless steel, black, white or green, with wooden knobs and handles and an E61 flow control paddle available as factory options.

Key Features of the Bezzera Sole PID

🔥 2-Litre Heat-Exchanger Boiler

Brass construction and two litres of water mean you can brew and steam at the same time, and keep steaming, rather than waiting for a small boiler to catch up between drinks.

⚙️ Faema E61 Group Head

Thermosyphon circulation keeps hot water moving through the group continuously, so the first shot of the morning lands at the same temperature as the fourth.

🔇 Rotary Pump

Quiet enough to hold a conversation over while it pulls, and it holds pressure more steadily through a long extraction than a vibration pump does.

💧 Dual Water Connection

Run it from the 4-litre internal tank or plumb it straight into a mains line — the same machine does both, so a future kitchen renovation doesn't force an upgrade.

🌡️ PID Control with Shot Timer

Set brew temperature in one-degree increments and watch extraction time count up on the same display, which is most of what dialling in a new bag actually requires.

🛡️ Automatic Fill and Low-Water Cutout

The boiler tops itself up as you use it, and the heating element shuts off if the tank runs dry — the two failures that most often kill a home machine.

Flow Control on the E61 Group — What It Actually Changes

The Sole can be ordered with a flow control paddle fitted to the E61 group. It is a valve sitting above the group that lets you vary how fast water reaches the puck, in real time, while the shot is running. Standard E61 machines give you one flow rate and one pressure curve for every coffee you own; the paddle turns that into something you steer.

  • Pre-infusion: open the paddle a fraction to wet the puck at low pressure for 8–15 seconds, which settles the bed and reduces channelling before full pressure arrives.
  • Ramp up: open it fully to bring the shot to 9 bar and establish the extraction.
  • Taper down: close it gradually through the second half of the shot to drop pressure as the puck opens up, pulling out sweetness without the harshness that comes from over-extracting at full pressure.

In practice this is what lets a light, modern roast taste like it does at a specialty cafe rather than thin and sour. It also rescues coffees that run too fast — you can slow the shot with the paddle instead of regrinding. If you drink medium and dark roasts and are happy with a repeatable 9-bar shot, you will not miss it; if you buy rotating single origins, it is the option worth having.

Bezzera Sole PID vs Bezzera Aria R PID

The Aria R is the machine directly below the Sole in Bezzera's rotary-pump range, and it is the comparison most people are actually making. Both are heat exchangers with an E61 group and a rotary pump; the difference is boiler capacity, bench footprint and whether flow control is included or chosen.

Feature Bezzera Sole PID Bezzera Aria R PID
Boiler 2L brass heat exchanger 1.5L heat exchanger
Element 1450W 1300W
Water tank 4 litres, or plumbed 3 litres, or plumbed
Flow control Optional factory fit Included as standard
Bench width 305mm 250mm

Di Pacci recommendation: Take the Sole if you regularly make three or more milk drinks in a row, or if steaming performance matters more to you than bench space — the extra half-litre of boiler and 150W of element is exactly what you feel on the fourth cappuccino. Don't bother if you make one or two coffees a day and your bench is tight: the Aria R gives you the same group, the same rotary pump and flow control included, in a machine 55mm narrower and for less money. Buying the Sole for a two-coffee household is paying for headroom you'll never use.

Grinders That Suit the Sole PID

An E61 heat exchanger will show you exactly how good or bad your grinder is. At this level the grinder matters more to the cup than the machine does, so budget for one properly rather than treating it as an afterthought.

Grinder Burr Why it pairs well
Niche Zero 63mm conical Single-dose with near-zero retention, so you can switch coffees between shots when experimenting with the flow control paddle
Turin DF64 Gen 2.5 64mm flat Ultra-low retention and an SSP burr upgrade path — flat-burr clarity that suits the lighter roasts flow control is made for
Eureka Mignon Specialita 55mm flat Quiet, stepless and compact enough to sit beside a 305mm-wide machine without crowding the bench
Mazzer Mini Electronic 58mm flat Commercial-grade build that matches the Sole's service life — the pairing for a machine you intend to keep for a decade
Varia VS3 Gen 2 83mm flat Competition-grade single dosing for anyone chasing the last few percent of extraction quality

Who This Machine Is For

✓ Ideal if you:
  • Make three or more milk drinks back to back and are tired of waiting for a boiler to recover
  • Want the option to plumb into mains water now or after a future kitchen renovation
  • Already own a decent grinder, or have budgeted $800 or more for one
  • Care about how the machine looks — four panel finishes plus optional wooden knobs and handles
  • Want to experiment with pressure profiling via the optional flow control paddle
  • Value a machine that can be serviced locally with parts held in Australia
✗ Consider alternatives if you:
  • Have less than 305mm of bench width or 415mm of clearance under a cupboard — measure before ordering
  • Are buying your first espresso machine; start with the Lelit Anna PL41 and put the difference into a grinder
  • Want a machine that is ready in under ten minutes from cold, since an E61 group needs 25–30 minutes to stabilise
  • Need independent brew and steam temperature control, which means a dual boiler such as the Bezzera Duo
  • Can't accommodate 27kg on the bench, or need to move the machine regularly

Bezzera Sole PID — Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Bezzera Sole PID need a special power point?

No. The Sole PID runs on a standard Australian 10 amp power point. Its 1450W element draws roughly 6 amps at 240V, so no electrician and no dedicated 15 amp circuit is required. Avoid running it on a shared extension lead with other high-draw kitchen appliances.

Can the Bezzera Sole PID be plumbed into mains water?

Yes — it is a dual-connect machine, so it runs from either the 4-litre internal tank or a direct mains connection, and you can switch between them later. We recommend fitting a water filter or softener on the mains line, because scale damage from untreated water is the most common cause of expensive boiler repairs and is not covered by warranty. Plumbed installation is available for Sydney metro areas.

Should I add the flow control paddle?

Add it if you buy rotating single-origin or lighter roasts and want to shape each extraction with pre-infusion and a declining pressure ramp. Skip it if you drink medium to dark roasts and want a repeatable 9-bar shot with minimal fuss. It is a factory option fitted before delivery, so it is cheaper to order now than to retrofit later — call us on (02) 9758 0760 if you want to talk it through before committing.

Is the Bezzera Sole PID suitable for a beginner?

It can be, but it is not the cheapest way to learn. An E61 heat exchanger rewards good grinding, consistent dosing and a bit of technique, and it will expose a poor grinder immediately. If this is your first machine and your budget covers both, buy the machine and a quality grinder together rather than pairing it with an entry-level grinder. If the budget only stretches to one, start with a simpler machine and spend more on the grind.

How long does the Sole PID take to heat up?

Like all E61 machines, the boiler reaches pressure well before the group head is thermally stable. Allow 25 to 30 minutes from cold for genuinely consistent shots. A cheap timer switch on the power point is the usual solution — set it to turn on half an hour before you get up.

How much bench space does the Bezzera Sole PID need?

The machine is 305mm wide, 455mm deep and 415mm high, and weighs 27kg. Allow additional clearance above for filling the tank from the top and behind for the water connection and power lead. Measure the gap under any overhead cupboards before ordering, as 415mm plus tank access is where most bench-fit problems occur.

What colours does the Sole PID come in?

Panels are available in stainless steel, black, white or green. Wooden knobs and handles can be specified as an option on any finish, as can a flow control paddle in black or wood. Colour and option choices are made at the time of order because they are fitted at the factory.

Who services the machine in Australia and what does the warranty cover?

Di Pacci has an in-house service team with parts held in stock, so warranty and out-of-warranty work is handled directly rather than sent to a third party. The Sole PID carries a 24 month parts and labour Australian warranty. Damage caused by limescale from untreated water is excluded, which is why we recommend water filtration on plumbed installations. Call (02) 9758 0760 to book a service.

Product Assessment for warranty repair.

Once proof of purchase has been established, if the product fault can safely and clearly be determined, we will offer you either a refund, exchange or repair. The available remedy will depend on whether the fault amounts to a major failure. In some instances, we may need to consult with the manufacturer or importer to determine the fault and resolution. Most faults can be easily repaired within a reasonable time frame. We will not offer a repair or replacement if the product has been damaged via misuse or abuse. Examples include but are not limited to inadequately filtered water, lime scaling, corrosion due to high chloride ion concentrations in water, operator errors, unauthorised repair work or modification and fair wear and tear.

Whist we understand that many clients would like a loan machine in the event of a warranty item, we regret that this service is not available. We prioritise all warranty work over general repair to ensure the most rapid service possible.

  •     Where there is no fault found, the product will be made available for collection by the customer.
  •     When assessing product fault, it is up to you whether you would prefer to deal with Di Pacci Coffee or the manufacturer or importer directly. Where multiple items were purchased in that transaction, it limits our ability to establish proof of purchase. We cannot provide copies of receipts if lost or misplaced.
2  Please note: When a refund is granted, we will refund the original purchase price via the previous method of payment indicated on the receipt.
